Semiotics

Semiotics

Semiotics: the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation.

Without the thought bubble, viewers of this picture would immediately believe there is a close relationship between the man and child in this photo due to their positioning, in fact this is a clever use of signs and symbols to lead the viewer into believing that they have a close relationship. The thought bubble shows that in actual fact, this pair of actors may have no relation to each other at all; this photo is the perfect illustration of how the media uses signs and symbols to lead us into believing something which is not necessarily true in reality.

We will be applying semiotics in our film, particularly to highlight the roles that the two main characters play. The props we use in filming such as a tripod, script and deliberate showing of the camera will hopefully convey that the main characters are a journalist and a cameraperson. It is very important for the storyline that the characters careers are clearly depicted and therefore we will be relying heavily on semotics for this.
