Deconstructing a Poster - 'The Wolfman'

This poster is eye catching and portrays the genre of Horror very well. The body language and facial expression of the actress in the foreground gives the viewer an idea of how she is feeling, it is clear she is very scared. For our poster we want to use body language and facial expressions in the same way to convey the emotion of the actress, it helps the viewer to feel more involved in the action and allows them to empathise. In the background of the image there is a figure which is unclear but it is clear that the woman in the foreground is in fear of this figure. The audience can see this figure whereas the woman cannot this is an example of dramatic irony, this means the viewer knows something the actress does not, it keeps them in suspense. This would be a good feature for our poster as it makes the audience feel involved. The darkness of the image and the muted colours conform to the convention of the horror genre, obviously this is something we should aim to apply in our ancilliary and main tasks.
Description of the main image
Foreground has a girl with a worried expression clearly hiding from the creature in the background
Is there more than one image? Why?
Yes. The foreground image builds tension due to her facial expression and the background adds anxiety
Layout
As we can see something the character cannot. Main image – right third, background image – centre third
Framing
Main image takes up 2/3 of the page and is framed by trees on the left and writing on the bottom
Colour scheme
Blue, white and yellow. Cool colour scheme which contradicts the genre it is displaying. Builds anxiety and tension. Dark, convention of horror film
Font
Sans and sand serif so they contrast against each other. The Wolfman is in serif to represent the horror genre and the necessary information is in sans serif
Tagline
The moon is full in the background which links to the tagline ‘the moon is full. The legend is coming to life.
Description of film title
The Wolfman in white and serif which strongly contrasts
Who is mentioned in the poster?
The main actors who are in the film, which is clearly a selling point, however not a main selling point due to them being smaller and less contrasted
How is the necessary information placed?
At the bottom in a grey, less contrasting font. Stand out less, no competition
Genre? How do you know?
Horror. Displays conventions of horror, dark colour scheme, and vulnerable main character. Evil non-human creature involved.
Connotations/effect of text
Things come out after dark that you aren’t aware of.
