We originally viewed this trailer on the TV, it made a real impact on us so we decided to analyse it further so we can use similar shots and sfx in our production to produce the same effect on the viewer. After viewing this trailer we decided that there are several shots within that we will endeavour to use in our production. We particularly like the end scene in the bathroom where the two girls are reciting 'Bloody Mary' in the dark. The music that is played during this scene builds tension and because it is shot in the dark we are kept in suspense. There is an anti-climax when one of the girls screams and then they leave the bathroom, this is deliberate to break the tension for the audience, the viewers are then shocked and startled when they notice what was behind the girls in the bathroom.
We like the fact that a home video style is used for certain scenes in this trailer, this gives off a real terrifying vibe, the viewer feels that they are being given an insight into the family's personal lives. The issues during filming of shaky footage could appear to be deliberate if we were also to use a home video style.
The use of children also makes it more effective due to them normally being more vulnerable and carefree compared to adults. When they are used in scenes to build tension the viewer is caught more off guard when something scary appears, the scaryness contrasts with the children.
We also really liked the use of transitions in this trailer, they are very flickery and create an uneasy atmosphere. The transitions match well with the music and the pace of the trailer increasing in speed towards the climax of the trailer. We really want to use transitions such as this in our trailer as we like the uneasy feel it creates, this style of transitions was also used in the first trailer we reviewed - Exposure.
